Scripture: “…Encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” Hebrews 3:13
Theme: ENCOURAGE
“I so remember your coming when everyone was having a hard time…you came & we sat at the table & talked… Then I knew I wasn’t alone. God sent a friend with hellos & smiles. Thank you”… Her letter came at Christmas 2014.
The writer’s recollection was from 30 years ago—The 1980’s “farm crisis” —some of us lived through it. Some readers may not know the financial heartaches of many farm families—losing their land, taking on other jobs, farm auctions, distressed parents reluctant to make their plight known, even suicides.
That was the time when local churches of several denominations wanted to see if we could be helpful. The plan was “for folks who were willing” to try. We began the effort of visiting as many farm families as possible–just to visit –assure confidentiality, and if there was stress –to listen.
Many times we don’t know how our efforts to offer encouragement turn out. I was blessed to have heard several times from the above writer—but still—30 years later –was a surprise. Yes, our words of encouragement can be far more appreciated than we could have imagined. As Christians, that’s part of our calling—to encourage.
Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica “We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God’s fellow-worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith…” 1 Thessalonians 3:12
Again, from Paul “…We urge you brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” 1 Thessalonians 5:14
As part of the church family at Springdale UMC I can vouch for the encouragement I’ve experienced for over 50 years from pastors, fellow church members, and supporters. Being together in worship, prayer, Sunday School, Bible study, many small group activities and more, we get to know people and want to help in times of need.
Frankly I can’t imagine going through life, especially the last few years, without the support of my SUMC church family.
In Hebrews 10:25 we read: “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another…” I’d encourage anyone who needs encouragement to join us for worship & fellowship at Springdale UMC.
Bishop Julius Trimble urges United Methodists “to encourage all people with the love of Jesus Christ to rise to their highest potential.” The Bishop usually closes his communications with “Be encouraged”, which I appreciate. So, if you’ve read this far —Be encouraged!
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for calling us to serve others. Help us recognize your call and respond, serving You in ways that benefit others. Amen
