Leadership Board Meeting Minutes

SUMC Leadership Board Meeting

May 28, 2015

Steven Grace opened the meeting on 5/28 at 7 pm with the following present: Dan McElderry, Diane Heick, Lynda & Larry Ambrose, Rhoda Barnhart, and Pastor Kimberly.

  1. After a short “thought provoking” video Steven led the group in prayer.

2.Trustees—The immediate issue for SUMC is the condition of our building’s roof.

After several years of concern, action is required because it is leaking. Dan led the discussion as 3 estimates were reviewed.

Dan moved that we contract with Robertson Construction to strip the roof & put on a metal roof per his bid of $25,564 plus any additional cost for needed work on the bell tower.  The congregation will be informed of the need for at least $12,000 in cash or pledges by August 1 with the understanding that if we raise enough we can keep the bell tower. Lynda seconded the motion which carried.

Ideas for raising money were discussed.  Lynda Ambrose agreed to head up a spaghetti dinner for noon on July 19 with a free will donation. Pastor Kimberly will look into possibilities related to Farmer’s Markets.

  1. Stewardship– Treasurer’s report—for January through April shows income of

$1,078 less than expenses.  While this is better than last year, it is still an alarming trend. We still have quite a few cookbooks left; ideas are welcome for ways to sell them.

  1. SPRC (Staff, Pastor Relations Committee)
    1. Selling items in the sanctuary (ex. Cookies, fruit, etc.) — after discussion, the group, by consensus, agreed to request that such transactions take place in the Upper Room following worship.
    2. “Coffee & Devotions” at Crestview—Pastor Kimberly has been conducting these services once a month. Since her time is limited and she would like to focus on other teaching areas, including to do a Bible study at SUMC in the fall, we discussed the possibility of lay people doing “Coffee & Devotions”. Rhoda agreed to put it on the COME agenda to provide leadership for carrying out this Outreach mission.

Youth Mission trip to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center at Chatham, IL. (several adults from SUMC visited/worked there last fall) Pastor Kimberly has tentative plans for July 23-25. Youth, 12 and older would stay in a dorm for $15 per night. Likely would need 2 male & 2 female chaperones.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE—Steven & Pastor Kimberly will be attending. Lynda moved, Diane seconded a motion to authorize checks from SUMC of $20 to each of 5 special offerings (totaling $100) during the conference. Motion carried.

—Items for the Midwest Mission will be collected at Annual Conference but SUMC will take collected items directly to the mission on the July youth trip.

Pastor Kimberly urged all to pray for the Annual Conference attendees and their deliberations and decisions. She closed our meeting with prayer.

Next meeting: Wed. July 29—6:30 pm SPRC;  7:00 pm. Board meeting

Respectfully submitted,

Rhoda Barnhart, Secretary

SUMC Leadership Board
