SUMC Ad Board Minutes-7/27/16

Springdale UMC Leadership Board Meeting—July 27, 2016

Steven Grace opened the meeting with the following present: Dan McElderry, Jim Farmer, Ruth Farmer, Theresa Mayhew, Diane Heick, Lynda Ambrose, Rhoda Barnhart, and Pastor Kimberly Bowles.

  1. Psalm 100 was read for the opening devotion, followed by prayer.
  2. SPRC
    1. Future discussion:
      1. Task Force? After considerable discussion about the future of SUMC the group agreed a Task Force should be formed to come up with option(s) that best fit our situation.
    2. Charge Conference
      1. The date hasn’t been set yet, but preparation is beginning. Steve distributed the worksheet forms, requesting that people review last year’s report and make suggestions for revisions/additions for the coming year.
  3. Trustees
    1. The Roof replacement is under way! Pray that showers miss us till completion.
    2. Dan requests kitchen counter doors be left open to aid circulation to help avoid musty smell/mold. If you need to close them please re- open before you leave. Also, close doors to basement.
  4. Stewardship
    1. Info sharing—after VBS Jim & Steve will get together to work on a stewardship plan which will include sending out a financial status report to church members.
  5. Other
    1. Parade -Hoover’s Hometown Days Sat, Aug. 7. Josh Sabourin is working on an entry featuring Springdale UMC’s Vacation Bible School which will start August 8.
    2. Healthy Church Initiative—Info from Jill Sanders answered some questions from our last meeting. About 170 Iowa churches have taken on the initiative and have seen an average of 30% increase in attendance (or membership?) We could take on the first year with little cost. Then we could decide about continuing– which would involve some expense. Pastor Kimberly will continue to gather info regarding locations where & when it will offered.
    3. Free lunches the week before school begins will again be provided by area churches. SUMC’s day will be Friday Aug. 19. This year Sack lunches will be served and those getting free lunches during the summer will be asked to sign up for days they will plan to eat August 15-19. We expect to partner with another church for Friday’s meal preparation. Cost will be divided between churches—The SUMC congregation will be invited to contribute; If that doesn’t cover it, COME Outreach will finance the balance.
    4. There are about 80 children registered for VBS. There was discussion of doing a survey of their parents to find out if they know about, or would be interested in other activities during the year such as the Halloween Party, Christmas program or Sunday School. We’d hope to reach families who don’t currently have a church home, to enjoy activities at SUMC. There seemed to be a consensus of those participating in the informal discussion that such a survey would be a good idea.

Next meeting:

October 5, 2016- 6:30 p.m. (SPRC); 7 p.m.(full board)

Closing prayer
