Thursday Devotion

By Steven Grace

John 14:26-27: 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Isaiah 41:10: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Jobs, kids, sports, church, service groups, family time…it seems like things tend to pile up quickly. Despite all the advances in technology that are supposed to make things easier, it seems like we are busier and busier.

I admit, there are times that I begin to feel overwhelmed, wondering how to prioritize my day to get the most accomplished. Just when it seems like I’m at my tipping point, some small voice pipes up in my head, reminding me there is a place to turn to to help reduce my burden.

Matthew 11:28-30 says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

God wants us to turn to Him. He wants us to trust His ways for us, and know that He will provide what we need. It is then that I remember the Jonny Diaz song “Breathe”. Going at a frenetic pace in the early going, it suddenly slows for the chorus:

When the stress is on the rise in my heart I feel You say just

(chorus)

Breathe, just breathe

Come and rest at My feet

And be, just be

Chaos calls but all you really need

Is to just breathe

We need to remember to stop, take a breath, and turn our hearts to the Lord. He is there to comfort us and lead us.

Prayer: Lord, give us pause and remind us to breathe. Turn our hearts and minds to you in all things, that you may give us the easy yoke and light burden. In Christ’s name, Amen.
